Spring has definitely made it's appearance here in southern Mississippi and the birds are starting to show up daily in our yard. I thought this would be the perfect time to share this Turquoise and Red Birds Cake.
Funny thing ... the cake that inspired my design is actually called a Winter Birds Wedding Cake and you can see the details of it here on Brooklyn Cake. But just for kicks - we're gonna pretend it's a spring cake, m'kay? Good! 😉
Either way... winter, spring... whatever the season - I love the look of this turquoise & red combo.
The cake was an 8" round vanilla cake covered in turquoise vanilla buttercream. I used Americolor Sky Blue to color the frosting - but it only took a tiny bit!
After the cake was smoothed, I piped on the branches with thinned white buttercream and a #2 round tip, then used Super Red to make some frosting for the tiny red berries.
The red birds (cardinals) were cut out with this mini bird cutter and I added a few details on some of them with gum paste tools. They were made with Satin Ice Red Fondant.
And of course, the letters were done with my favorite Funky Alphabet Tappit Cutters. You'll find my tutorial for how to use Tappit Cutters here.
And that's it I think! OH... before I go.
Don't forget that right now you can get the Lifetime Membership to Pretty Witty Cakes for 50% Off! That deal is only good through the end of March so don't miss out on it!

Rose - Love the turquoise and red! Just perfect! I'm interested in what size cake boxes you order for boxing up one dozen and 2 dozen cupcakes without using inserts. I would love this info!
Thank you! Happy Spring!

I buy 10"x7" boxes for 1 dozen and 14"x10" boxes for 2 dozen!

Thank you!

Rose,
I ordered samples in the sizes you suggested. I can only fit 6 in the smaller size and 12 in the larger one. There isn't enough room for more cupcakes but too much "sliding around" room left. I'm really wanting to find the sizes you use to pack cupcakes without inserts. I don't like the inserts, and honestly, the price for both the box and the insert is really too much. Would you made measuring the boxes you use, please? Could it be the 12x9 for a dozen? Thank you so much! Lee

Those are the exact boxes I use for dozen and two dozen. My cupcakes are snug in the boxes - you can see them here: http://rosebakes.com/where-to-buy-cake-cupcake-boxes-and-inserts/. Maybe your cupcakes are bigger than mine.

Made pink apples and they was pretty but bitter. Do u know why?
Rose
I haven't had that problem but others have said that the flavoring (or even the coloring) makes the candy bitter. Maybe try using less and see if that helps!?

Just wondering....I haven't tried attaching fondant or gumpaste to the sides of a buttercream cake. I've been wanting to try your marshmallow fondant so I can do more decorations on the side, but I just love buttercream! Do you wait for the frosting to crust? Do you brush the fondant with water or buttercream to make it stick? I've read so many different ideas, I'm not sure which to trust. My biggest fear is sending a cake out the door & the decorations falling off in the middle of a party.
Any advice?
Rose
I try to put the decorations on before the buttercream crusts. If it has crusted, I use a little smear of fresh buttercream on the back of the fondant to adhere it. So far I haven't had any fall off!
