Welcome Baby Boy Clothes Line Baby Shower Cake

This cake was for a family friend and she didn’t care how I designed it… she just wanted a small cake for a baby shower and she wanted it to say “Welcome Baby Boy”.

I’ve always wanted to do a cake with a clothes line of tiny baby clothes on it – so this was my chance!! There’s not a lot to tell here. It was an 8″ round vanilla cake. I filled and frosted it with vanilla buttercream.

I used Americolor Sky Blue for the frosting and then I cut the tiny clothes out of homemade marshmallow fondant. I think my buttercream work is improving… huh?

I piped a “clouds” for the border using one of my huge round tips from the Ateco Large Tube Set. I love those tips and use them all the time – especially for cupcake decorating!!

Finishing a cake with buttercream is still not my favorite way to decorate and I have a really hard time with it (ie., it stresses me out BIG TIME), but it’s getting easier and I don’t mind it as much as I used to.

I used the new Wilton Silicone Alphabet & Number molds for the “writing” on the cake. I’m really loving this font and using it more and more! Also, I used royal icing and a #2 piping tip to do the clothes line!

And I think that’s all I can tell you about this cake! I have four cake orders plus cupcakes and a smash cake to finish up for this weekend – so I’m gonna get back to it!

  1. This looks great. Can’t even tell its a buttercream finish. I’m going to make a baby shower cake with the clothes but I couldn’t find the mold to do it with. Might use your idea and just cute them out.

    Thanks!

  2. I was going to try to make something similar to this cake soon, and I just wondered how many layers of cake you used? This looks like a taller than 3 layers cake.
