Last night (very, very late last night) I finished up these Wizard of Oz Cake Pops. When I posted them on Facebook, someone asked about pinning them, so I thought I’d throw together a quick post.
Let me start by saying, I’ve never seen the Wizard of Oz. (GASP!!!) I know, I know…. HOW did that happen? Well, I’m not really sure except to say that growing up, we weren’t really big movie watchers.
We watched TV – my Mama loves football and my Daddy is a news junkie – and there were TV shows we didn’t miss, but we didn’t watch many movies – especially old ones. There’s a long list of other movies I’ve never seen that sometimes amazes people (and truly astounds my husband) … Sound of Music, Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, It’s a Wonderful Life… I could go on for days.
Anywho… when I asked to do Wizard of Oz Cake Pops, I had to rely on Pinterest for inspiration and these are the 5 designs I came up with! I really wish I had taken a photo of all of them… I made 20 of each design.. 100 in total!
They were all vanilla cake and I used Wilton Candy Melts for all of the dipping! You can see How to Make Cake Pops here and I have a post up for dealing with the super thick candy melts and How to Thin Candy Melts for Dipping.
First up… the Dorothy Cake Pops. These were inspired by the Ruby Red Shoes and her blue & white dress. I dipped them in red candy melts, then sprinkled on red sparkling sugar, then used a dot of melted chocolate to glue on the tiny blue bows that I found on Etsy.
The Tin Man Cake pops were maybe my favorites?! Or the Dorothy ones?? Not sure. Either way – I dipped these in white candy melts, then sprayed them with Wilton Silver Color Mist, then blued on the Jumbo Red Hearts with a dot of chocolate.
For the Emerald City cake pops, I used yellow candy melts then added a some green candy coloring (I didn’t like the shade of green from the straight green candy melts… I wanted more “emerald” color) and then I used green sparkling sugar! Note: you must use candy coloring – not regular gel coloring!!!
And last… the Wicked Witch Hat Cake Pops. I used these Nabisco Chocolate Wafers for the brim – dipped them in the black candy melts then let that dry. Then I dipped the cone shaped cake pop in black candy melts and set it down on the wafer.
And that’s it… my interpretation of the Wizard of Oz Cake Pops (having never seen the movie 😉 )!
