Mickey Mouse Cake and Smash Cake

You may recognize this Mickey Mouse Cake – I’ve done it before here. Christo’s mom asked that I do the same cake for him… plus a smash cake!
I really do love this fun and simple Mickey Mouse cake.

So, here are a few details for you…
First, the bottom cake was 2 layers of 8″ round cake. The flavor on this cake was butter cake with vanilla buttercream filling and frosting. Mickey’s head was done with the Wilton Sports ball pan (or half of it 😉 ).
For the ears, I mixed lots of Tylose into some Satin Ice Black Vanilla fondant, then I rolled it out thin and used a 3″ round cutter to cut them out. I made them ahead of time then let them dry for 24-48 hours.
When I was ready to put them on, I used Tylose glue (tylose plus water to form a sticky edible glue) to “glue”craft sticks to the back of the ears. I covered them with a narrow trip of fondant and let them dry some more, then I just pushed the bottom of the sticks into the cake!
The feet were rice cereal treats covered in fondant. I mimicked the “Disney” font for his name using Satin Ice red fondant.
The red and black fondant were Satin Ice brand: Satin Ice Red Vanilla fondant and Satin Ice Black Vanilla fondant. The white and yellow were homemade marshmallow fondant.

For the smash cake, it was a single layer butter cake with vanilla buttercream. I used a large Mickey Mouse Cookie Cutter to do the head and the “1” from this Fox Run Numbers cookie cutters set.
I piped on the red buttercream using a large round tip from the Ateco Large Tube set (one of my favorite things)!

And that’s it!

Hi,
Imitation, they say, is the sincerest form of flattery .. and i just HAVE to let you know that I copied this design of yours for a cake for a friend’s niece who turned 1 today.
The entire family was THRILLED to bits seeing the cake …of course, me being an absolute amateur haven’t got the perfect finish that you have on your cake … but i loved making it! The family didn’t want any black fondant, so i covered the ‘black’ portion with dark chocolate ganache and made the ears using Chocopie biscuits on a skewer …
just wanted to say Thanks for putting up a wonderful design …
warm regards,
Gitanjali

That’s awesome Gitanjali! Thank you for sharing! xx

Nope!
Rose……please oh please share your secret to making Red buttercream icing!! I am attempting to make a miniature version for my twins smash cakes (using buttercream instead of fondant) but I can’t get past PINK. I used Wilton Red…….unfortunately my icing went from white and delicious to pink and tasting like dye 🙁
Love, Love, Love your designs!!! I have learned so much from your blogs! Thank you for sharing!!!
Hi Jana! No secret really… I make my regular vanilla buttercream, then I use a mix of Americolor Super Red and Americolor Tulip Red. I still have to use a LOT of coloring, but it takes a good hour for the color to fully develop and then it will darken more once it’s on the cake and crusts!
Thank you!!!
Do you use a regular rice crispy treat recipe or a different one? Never molded with it and want to know if there is a secret to making it for molding.
Thanks!
Just regular Rice Krispie Treats, but I squish them together until I get a very compact consistency to work with.
Is the mickey covered in fondant?
Yes, Satin Ice Black fondant.
Where are you located because I was trying to get a Mickey mouse cake for my son he’ll be one in March and how much you charge
I’m in Meadville, MS.
Hi, Did you use rice krispies to make Mickey’s head?
No, I use cake 🙂 A half ball baked in the Wilton sports ball pan.
Thanks so much! I’ve never baked with that. About how long does it bake in that pan? At 350°?
I bake at 325°F and I use a flower nail as a “heating core” in the pan. I think it takes around 35-38 minutes? I don’t remember exactly. I always start checking my cakes at 35 minutes
I love your cake tutorials, thank you for sharing!About how much would you charge for this cake?
At this time, I would charge $120 for this cake.
Would that include the cost of the smash cake?
No. Smash cakes are an additional $15-20.
Hi. I want to do this cake for my son. I was just wondering about how fondant you used for each color for the 3D Mickey Mouse cake. I haven’t nailed making fondant so I’m going to buy, and I wanted to know how much I should buy. Thanks!
Thanks for the tutorial! I made this cake this weekend for my son’s second birthday. The trickiest part for me was covering the feet. It came out super cute, and my son was very excited for his Mickey cake. 🙂
That’s awesome to hear!! 🙂
How did you shape the rice crispy treats to look like mickey feet?
I just sculpted them by hand until they looked right.
How did you use the fondant for the lettering? and do it so perfectly
I searched online and found the “Disney font” then I rolled out tiny strings of fondant and individually shaped each letter to match the font.

For mickeys hat, did you cover the bowl with just fondant and if so how did you peel it off? It is it cake baked in the bowl? Thanks
I baked cake in a half ball pan, then flipped it out and covered with fondant.
Hello!
Thank you so much for showing this Mickey Mouse cake! How much do you think a bakery would charge for the Mickey Mouse cake? The one with ears and feet? Just weighing my options
There’s absolutely no way for me to know that, sorry. Prices vary based on location, demand, and popularity… anywhere from $2.50 to $10 per serving based on my experience.
