Upgrade your Summer with these Grilled Brats with 7UP® BBQ Sauce. They are perfect for summer parties and afternoon picnics.
We have an amazing backyard at our new home with this beautiful pergola (and gazebo). Ever since the weather warmed up, I've been itching to have a picnic table underneath it. I had searched online for one that would "fit" my family (most are not big enough) and the only ones I found were crazy-expensive.
Knowing that we really wanted to enjoy our beautiful space more this summer, a couple of weeks ago my son Caleb built me an 8-foot picnic table for Mother's Day. And YAY!!, all 8 of us can sit and eat with a little elbow room to boot 🙂 See:
Anyway, things have been crazy busy, but finally we had an afternoon with nothing going on and we were able to have our first picnic lunch outside on our new picnic table! On the menu... Grilled Brats with 7UP BBQ Sauce.
This homemade BBQ Sauce is so good and really easy to make. You probably have everything on hand already, but if not, you can grab everying at Walmart. That's where I also bought the 7UP and Johnsonville Brats for todays recipe. The Johnsonville Brats can be found in the refrigerated meats area and you'll find the 12-pk/12 oz cans of 7UP on the drinks aisle.
I have to tell you - usually I'm a lazy cook and I like buying and having pre-made sauces on hand. But it never fails - there's always that one ingredient that you think you have... until you get ready to grab it and you don't. For me, often the thing I'm often missing is BBQ sauce.

But if that happens to you - don't panic! Making homemade 7UP BBQ Sauce is a breeze! You'll only need 7UP, ketchup, worcestershire sauce, salt, onion, brown sugar, and black pepper. The 7UP adds a little extra special flavor with its 100% natural flavors and its iconic lemon lime flavor!
Today I'm using the 7UP BBQ Sauce for bratwurst, but it would also be delicious on chicken, burgers, steaks and more!
Also, this was my first time to grill bratwurst sausages and wow - we loved the Johnsonville Brats!
My kids were even impressed and they can sometimes be picky! I have to say - we'll definitely be serving these again when we have cook-outs in the backyard. They're easy and delicious and a you can #UpgradeYourSummer when you cook these!
I simply cooked the brats over medium flames until they were brown on all sizes, basting with the 7UP BBQ Sauce each time I flipped them. My husband is usually manning the grill at our house but I cooked these and was pretty proud of how well they turned out.

Your 16 year old son built this? Great job!
Rose
He did! My husband helped a little because he was nervous about using the table saw, but probably 90% of the work was done by him! I am SO proud of it!!

Rose, Rose, Rose. What a smart kid. If he can make that at 16, imagine what he'll be making in the future. Good job to all who taught him. If I knew him, I would shake his hand myself. You tell him for me won't you, Rose?
Rose
I will tell him 🙂

Do you remember about how much of this BBQ sauce this recipe makes? You think one cup, two cups?
Rose
Yes, it was almost exactly 2 cups. 🙂

Do you think using 7UP Zero Sugar Soda would work for this recipe?
Rose
I think so, but I haven't tried it!
