Best Buttermilk Ranch
Homemade dressings are always better than store-bought (in my humble opinion), and this recipe is no exception.
Let me first say – I’m not above grabbing a packet of ranch seasoning or a bottle of ranch dressing in a pinch.
But I also think everyone needs one go-to homemade buttermilk ranch dressing recipe. Made with real ingredients, plenty of herbs, and just the right amount of tangy buttermilk, it’s creamy, flavorful, and tastes even better than your favorite restaurant ranch.
Whether you’re drizzling it over the most popular salad, serving it with buffalo wings, dunking fresh vegetables, or using it as a ranch dip for potato chips and french fries, this easy recipe comes together in just a few minutes with simple ingredients you can grab at any grocery store.
Once you start making your own dressings, you’ll never look at store-bought ranch dressing the same way again. Also – it makes a great dip!

Why You’ll Love This Homemade Ranch Dressing
- Made with simple pantry staples
- Rich, creamy texture with the perfect tangy flavor
- Better than bottled ranch dressings or store-bought packets
- Ready in about 5 minutes
- Easily customize the thickness
- Great as both a ranch salad dressing and ranch dip
- Stores well for several days
What Makes This the Best Ranch Dressing?
Unlike many bottled ranch dressings that rely on preservatives and artificial flavors, this homemade version uses quality ingredients for fresh, authentic flavor.
The combination of mayonnaise, sour cream, and regular buttermilk creates the perfect creamy base, while garlic powder, black pepper, dried herbs, and fresh herbs provide the signature ranch flavor everyone loves.
The best part? You can easily adjust it to make a thicker consistency for dipping or a thinner dressing for salads simply by changing the amount of buttermilk.\
Tools Needed
You don’t need a food processor or any other fancy tools to make homemade ranch!
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Cutting board
- Sharp knife
- Garlic press (optional, if not using pre-minced garlic)
- Medium mixing bowl
- Whisk
- Rubber spatula
- Airtight container or mason jar for storing the dressing in the refrigerator
Ingredients You’ll Need
This Buttermilk Ranch comes together so easily and uses only staple ingredients found at all grocery stores to make the best ranch dressing!
- Mayonnaise
- Sour Cream
- Buttermilk
- Chives
- Dill
- Parsley
- Worcestershire sauce
- Garlic
- Salt
Ingredient Notes
Buttermilk
Use real buttermilk whenever possible for the richest flavor. If you don’t have any on hand, you can make your own buttermilk by adding 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or white vinegar to a cup of milk or whole milk and letting it sit for about 10 minutes.
If you prefer a richer dressing, use less buttermilk. For a pourable dressing, simply add a little bit more until it reaches your desired consistency.
You can even use buttermilk powder if that’s what you keep stocked in your pantry.
Herbs
This recipe uses fresh herbs, but you can certainly use dry herbs if you’re making it year-round.
The exact amount of dried herbs you’ll need is about one third of the amount in fresh herbs.
Mayonnaise
Use your favorite brand, or make homemade mayonnaise for an even fresher flavor.
Some people even substitute plain Greek yogurt for part of the mayonnaise or sour cream to lighten it up.
(Do not substitute Miracle Whip, since its sweetness changes the classic ranch flavor.)
How to Make Homemade Buttermilk Ranch Dressing
- Add the mayonnaise, sour cream, and buttermilk to a small bowl. I used a glass measuring cup so I could easily pour it into my bottle later.
- Then whisk that together until smooth.

- Next, chop up your fresh herbs (I’m only showing chives and dill here, but I also add parsley!):
- Add a splash of Worcestershire Sauce into the whisked ingredients…
- Then add the fresh herbs, minced garlic, and salt. (if you want to garnish your dressing before serving, reserve a little of the fresh herbs).

- Whisk it all together again… then chill it for at least an hour. Garnish (if desired) and serve it cold with your favorite salad, fresh veggies, or anything else you love with Ranch Dressing! You could also make this ranch in a jar by putting the lid on and giving it a good shake!
- Store any leftover ranch in an airtight jar in the fridge!

How Thick Should Ranch Dressing Be?
- One of the best things about making your own ranch is being able to control the consistency.
- For a ranch dip, use less buttermilk.
- For ranch salad dressing, add a splash of buttermilk until you reach the perfect pourable texture.
- If you accidentally make it too thin, simply add a little more mayonnaise or sour cream.
Ways to Serve Homemade Ranch
This dressing goes with almost everything.
Serve it with:
- buffalo wings
- chicken wings
- veggie trays
- fresh vegetables – use it as veggie dip!
- favorite veggies
- potato chips
- french fries
- pizza
- sandwiches
- wraps
- burgers
- baked potatoes
- salads
Homemade Ranch vs Store-Bought
While Hidden Valley Ranch is probably the most recognizable ranch dressing, making your own offers several advantages:
- fresher ingredients
- no preservatives
- customizable thickness
- richer flavor
- tastes more like restaurant ranch
- less processed than most bottled ranch dressings
After one bite, your taste buds will understand why homemade ranch tastes so much better.
Storage Tips
- Store leftover dressing in an airtight container or mason jar in the refrigerator.
- Because this recipe contains fresh dairy, always pay attention to the expiration date on your buttermilk.
- The dressing keeps well for about one week.
- Shake or stir before serving since some separation is normal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use regular milk instead of buttermilk?
Yes, but the flavor won’t be quite as tangy. You can make your own by adding lemon juice or vinegar to regular milk.
Can I freeze ranch dressing?
Freezing isn’t recommended because dairy-based dressings can separate after thawing.
Can I use fresh herbs instead of dried?
Absolutely! Fresh herbs provide even more fresh flavor.
Why does restaurant ranch taste better?
Many restaurants make ranch from scratch using quality ingredients and real buttermilk instead of bottled dressing.
Tips for the Best Homemade Ranch
- Chill for at least 30 minutes before serving.
- Use quality mayonnaise.
- Don’t skip the sour cream.
- Taste before serving and adjust salt or pepper.
- Add more buttermilk for a thinner dressing.
- Use less buttermilk for dipping.
Alrighty – let’s make some dressing!
