Air Fryer Tortilla Pizza

This recipe has been on Rose Bakes for many, many years, and it’s definitely overdue for an update! The first time I posted it was 2010 and my kids were little… and they made their own:

Back when I first shared it, we made our tortilla pizzas under the oven broiler because air fryers weren’t sitting on everyone’s kitchen counter yet.

These days, we use our air fryer almost every day, including for tortilla pizzas. It gives the tortilla an incredibly crispy, thin crust in just a few minutes, with almost no cleanup.

Even after all these years, this is still one of our favorite quick meals. It’s almost too simple to call a recipe.

They’re super easy, and whether you need a quick lunch, an after-school snack, or an easy weeknight dinner, these crispy tortilla pizzas come together with just a handful of pantry staples.

Why You’ll Love This Air Fryer Tortilla Pizza Recipe

Skip the pizza rolls or thin-crust pizza and make homemade tortilla pizzas! Here’s why they’re the better option:

Easy enough for kids to make. When my children were younger, tortilla pizzas were one of their favorite lunches to make on their own. They loved choosing their own toppings, and I loved that they were learning to cook while making something everyone enjoyed.

Ready in less than 10 minutes. From start to finish, you can have crispy, cheesy homemade pizzas on the table in less than 10 minutes. When everyone is hungry right now, this recipe saves the day.

Budget-friendly. A package of flour tortillas, a little sauce, and some shredded cheese cost much less than frozen pizzas or takeout. Plus, you can use whatever toppings you already have in the refrigerator, making them a great way to use up leftovers.

Ingredients

With only a handful of simple ingredients from any grocery store, you can have this easy recipe finished in less than 10 minutes!

ingredients for tortilla pizza
  • Small flour tortillas (8-inch tortillas work great) – you can also use low carb tortillas or whole wheat tortillas
  • Your favorite pizza sauce, marinara sauce, or spaghetti sauce
  • Shredded mozzarella cheese (or cheddar or whatever melty cheese you love)
  • Pepperoni, mushrooms, onions, bell peppers, ground beef, black olives, Italian sausage, or any other favorite toppings

How to Make Air Fryer Tortilla Pizza

You are only a few steps away from an easy air fryer tortilla pizza!

  1. Preheat your air fryer to 400°F.
  2. Place one flour tortilla directly into the bottom of the air fryer basket or on the air fryer rack. Spread a thin layer of pizza sauce over the tortilla, leaving about ½ inch around the edges of the tortilla. Don’t use too much sauce or the tortilla can become soggy.
  3. Sprinkle with shredded mozzarella cheese.

  1. Next add your toppings… slices of pepperoni or your favorite toppings. Be careful not to overload the top of the pizza so the tortilla stays crispy.
  2. Air fry for 3 to 5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the tortilla’s edges are golden brown and crispy.

  1. Carefully remove the pizza with tongs or a spatula, transfer to a cutting board, slice, and serve immediately.

*Cooking times may vary slightly depending on your air fryer model, so start checking around the 3-minute mark to avoid overcooking.

Oven Instructions

If you don’t have an air fryer, this simple recipe also works in the oven. That’s actually how we made them for years before air fryers were a thing.

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F.
  2. Place the tortilla on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  3. Add the sauce, mozzarella cheese, and toppings.
  4. Bake for 7 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until the cheese is melted and the edges of the pizza are crisp.
  5. For an extra crispy crust, place the tortilla directly on the oven rack during the last 2 minutes of baking.

Another option is to place these easy tortilla pizzas under the broiler for a couple of minutes. Just be sure to watch them closely because they can go from perfectly crispy and delicious to burnt in a matter of seconds.

Tips for the Best Tortilla Pizza

  • Use flour tortillas instead of corn tortillas for the crispiest texture.
  • No pizza sauce, marinara, or spaghetti sauce? Mix a pinch of Italian seasoning into plain tomato sauce for an easy substitute.
  • Spread only a thin layer of sauce. Too much sauce can make the crust soft instead of crispy.
  • Freshly shredded mozzarella melts better than pre-shredded cheese, but either works well.
  • Cook one pizza at a time for the best air circulation and the crispiest crust.
  • Let everyone add their own favorite toppings for an easy pizza night the whole family will enjoy.
  • For an even crispier crust, lightly brush the bottom of the pizza (tortilla) with olive oil before adding the sauce and toppings.

Pizza Toppings

Air fryer tortilla pizzas can be topped with almost anything you’d put on a traditional pizza. Just don’t overload them since they cook so quickly, and be sure to use fully cooked meats and other pre-cooked ingredients, as raw ingredients won’t have enough time to cook through.

  • Pepperoni slices or mini pepperoni
  • Cooked Italian sausage
  • Ground beef
  • Mushrooms
  • Bell peppers or green peppers
  • Red onions
  • Black olives
  • Fresh basil
  • Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh mozzarella
  • Red pepper flakes for a little heat
  • Fresh basil leaves

Storage

Air Fryer Pizzas are best enjoyed fresh while the crust is crispy. If you have extras, store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

To keep a crispy air fryer tortilla pizza, reheat in the air fryer at 350°F for 2 to 3 minutes or in the oven until heated through. Microwaving works, but the tortilla won’t stay as crispy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use large tortillas?

Yes. Just trim them if needed so they’ll fit inside your air fryer basket, or use them in the oven.

Can I use low-carb tortillas?

What’s the best sauce to use?

Pizza sauce is our favorite, but marinara, pasta sauce, homemade pizza sauce, or even spaghetti sauce all work well.
