Okay - the name of this post is seriously too long... How to Make Fondant Chick Cupcake Toppers {Farm Animal Cupcake Toppers Series, Part 1}. Ha!
Update: You can also see how to do sheep, cows, and pigs here: Farm Animal Cupcake Toppers Series (just scroll through all the posts!).
I planned to do one post with all the different farm animals and then it took me over an hour to make the collage for just the chicks.
You see... I'm on vacation this week (riding big roller coasters and other fun stuff like that!) and I really hadn't planned to post at all, but then it rained all day and I slept for several hours trying to rid myself of a migraine and then I figured since there wasn't much else to do while the kids watched a movie... I'd throw together a quick post.
Except it wasn't so "quick" to make that collage, so I gave up after just the chicks. When I get home I'll try to do the other animals... 🙂
And it'll probably be better anyway if I do a post for each animal... right? Okay, good!
To do the chick, you'll need the following (shown in step 1):
- Yellow and orange fondant; I used homemade marshmallow fondant
- A black food marker
- Sugar Glue
- Paint brush
- Round Cookie Cutter, about 2"
- Mini triangle and flower cutters
- Small Rolling Pin (I use the Wilton 9" fondant rolling pin)
The pictures are self-explanatory. Roll out the yellow fondant and cut out 2" round circles. Then roll out the orange and cut out the beaks (triangles) and feet (flowers). I attach them with sugar glue to the yellow circle. After that, I draw on the eyes!! That's it!
I've done other chicks and had a few variations... one was almost all buttercream - you can see it in the Barnyard Full of Cupcakes post (warning: old post with not-so-great pictures!).
Then I did similar fondant chicks in this set of Barnyard Cupcakes with a Pig Smash Cake - except I piped a little fluff of hair on the top and didn't add the feet!
Kim
How thick are you rolling out the fondant for the toppers?
Rose
Probaby 3-4mm!? I haven't measured when doing them but I just got out my ruler and that's a close guess!
Rosie
If I put my fondant toppers on the day before I need them they go really soft and start to melt a bit. Can I avoid this? Love the chicks
Rose Atwater
If my toppers are really good and dry, they don't get soft but if they're still even a little soft, then you'd need to wait to put them on at the last minute.
Audrey
You make it look so easy! I might even be able to handle this one.
Thanks for sharing on #TastyTuesdays.

I've never used fondant before - thanks for the tutorial!
Rose
You're welcome 🙂

We are making these!! Do we put on a thin layer of frosting on the cupcakes before putting on the topper
Rose
Yes, you could put a small smear or you could actually pipe on a lot! I've done both 🙂

How far in advance can you make the fondant toppers? I have a lot to make and was hoping to make them in advance of the party.
Thanks!
Rose
They can be made days or even a weeks in advance. They need to be kept in a dark, dry place and I actually prefer to NOT seal them airtight.
