If you are planning an over-the-top elegant event for your wedding, then you will want a classy, luxury wedding cake to be the centerpiece for your reception. I'm sharing some of my favorite creations from classic white luxury wedding cakes to whimsical wedding cakes perfect for fairytale weddings.
Classy, Luxury Wedding Cake Ideas
Not only do brides want delicious cakes, they want custom wedding cakes to reflect their tastes, the theme of their wedding and to match the mood of their venues. Often these multi-tier cakes are the focal point of the reception and they are edible works of art.
In short - brides want their dream cake. And I love it that I can brag and say I've worked with some of the most amazing brides.
Every cake below was made for a bride that I adored and was so thrilled to make her dreams come true.
Elegant Wedding Cake Designs
My designs vary from classic wedding cakes to grand wedding cakes covered in intricate details. A luxury cake might be really tall and elegant but it doesn't have to be. The size of the cake doesn't dictate how detailed or beautiful it will be.
I've never considered myself to be on the level of luxury wedding cake designers or cake artists but I am very proud of the cakes that I've made and often can't even believe that I get to do a job I love this much from my home here in Mississippi.
My favorite day is a wedding day and delivering an amazing wedding cake to make a bride's dream come true.
Nothing is more exciting to me than seeing a bride's face light up when she sees her cake, or getting a message later from the bride or her family or guests complimenting how beautiful and delicious their cake was.
Wedding Cake Stands
To add to the visual appeal of a cake, it can be displayed on a wedding cake stand appropriate for the size, color, and theme of your reception, changing its appearance and presence.
As you scroll through the cakes below, notice the various stands: gold cake stands, silver cake stands, clear cake stands, and white stands. Some are plateau stands, and others are pedestal stands.
Here are some of the stands I own and rent out:
How to Order a Luxury Wedding Cake
Many of these cake designs start with wedding cake tastings or consultation appointments. I love meeting couples, and then helping them design a custom cake for their special events.
Sometimes the designs are based on the bride's dress, sometimes the wedding venue, and other times an overall theme. Having a consultation is one of the best ways to get an idea of the bride's vision and to allow them to taste my cake and decide on flavors.
I usually meet with the bride and at least one or two other people. Sometimes its the groom and mother of the bride. Sometimes a sister or bridesmaid will come along also. Or the mother of the groom - especially if they're also interested in a groom's cake.
So, let me show you some of my favorite and most popular luxury wedding cakes.
Sugar Flower Wedding Cakes
Sugar flowers are one of the most telling decorations on a luxury cake and well-done sugar flowers can take days to make. But if done well, they can take a cake from pretty to extraordinary.
Whether it's just a handful of flowers or an entire cake full of them, they are next-level decor on a wedding cake that really makes them a showstopper.
First up, this classic white wedding cake was the perfect luxury cake. With dozens of sugar flowers cascading around the cake plus the finishing touch was the top tier completely covered in a crown of white flowers! You can read more details of this stunning cake here.
Similarly, this white cake was also adorned with sugar flowers but had the extra touch of edible gold leaf and edible painted gold touches on the flowers. When I finished this one, it felt like I had created the perfect, dreamy wedding cake.
This beauty had one large spray of sugar roses with tiny gold berries mixed in. It also had a unique clear box stand with fresh flowers underneath to give it a pop of color.
Sugar flowers on a wedding cake don't have to be white - as seen here in this beautiful cake adorned with Sugar Sunflowers. This cake was a blank canvas - all white buttercream without even a border.
The bride loved sunflowers so I added different sized bright sunflowers falling down the side of the cake and it was so bright and happy and gorgeous! I share all the details here.
Buttercream Palette Painted Wedding Cakes
These bold beauties can be mostly white or have pops of color that really make them stand out! These cakes can stand on their own or have the addition of real or sugar flowers to compliment the buttercream painting.
This most recent cake is one of my all-time favorite cakes. It was six tiers of a buttercream-covered cake with blue petals painted on plus white and gold edible pearls. It had multiple cake flavors on the inside (two tiers of wedding cake, two tiers of strawberry cake and two tiers of lemon cake).
I added fresh hydrangeas and other flowers after it was assembled. This elegant cake was displayed on a clear box stand and the cake table was covered in a tablecloth that appeared to be made from a wedding dress. The details were so incredible.
This luxurious Bridgerton inspired cake was for a wedding reception with a theme that was breath-taking. There were gorgeous fresh flowers everywhere in beautiful pastel colors. Painting with buttercream is an art form that I could easily become addicted to. The more I design cakes like this one, the more I want to do! Read more about it here.
This cake was unique because it was a mix of rustic fall colors painted in buttercream plus life-like sugar roses that popped from the cake. It also had the unique quality of having hexagon tiers mixed with round tiers.
This bold cake was small but so memorable. The bride wanted vibrant colors and abstract wildflowers to showcase the colors she adored and the vibrancy of nature.
Almost entirely white, this magnolia-themed buttercream wedding cake had small touches of green for the leaves and gold for the flower centers. It still had the whimsy of painted buttercream while keeping to an almost all-white classic wedding cake theme.
Fondant Wedding Cakes
Years ago almost all of my cakes were fondant-covered but buttercream has made a comeback so I don't do as many fondant cakes these days.
However, some designs still require fondant and it's a medium I love working with. Especially after discovering this fondant that is perfect to work with and the best-tasting fondant I've ever had next to homemade marshmallow fondant.
This wedding cake with pressed edible flowers was for one of the intimate weddings that happened during the year following the pandemic. The venue was the perfect place for a special day and every detail was considered.
Because the list of wedding guests had to be very limited, this bride chose to have individually boxed cupcakes for a "drive-through" reception. Guests could drop off gifts and cards and pick up cupcakes as a wedding favor. It was a lovely idea that allowed her extended family and friends to feel included in her special day.
This unique cake was a work of art on the outside and a delicious cake on the inside. The waves were created with paper-thin fondant and I hand-placed sugar pearls of different sizes all around. On the inside, the bride chose chocolate chip cake with brown sugar buttercream for all of the tiers. It was perfection inside and out.
This fondant cake was really special because it was for my long-time assistant Susan. It was navy and white marbled fondant with gold veins. Then I added a mix of pink and white fresh flowers and greenery. I loved the unique colors and design - the mixed tier shapes along with the pops of color!
It's one of my most unique elegant cakes! You can read more about it here.
Fresh Flowers Cake Designs
Some cake designers don't love fresh flowers but I actually embrace any opportunity to adorn a cake with fresh flowers. Using the right tools, they are safe and beautiful and add so much texture and charm to a wedding cake.
This classic white cake had the pop of fresh flowers for the middle tier and its simplicity was stunning. The unique touches for this cake were the flower placement, the custom topper, and the contrasting square cake stand provided by the venue.
While this luxury cake was covered in buttercream and had the fun scallop-shaped tier on the bottom, the real "WOW" factor for this cake was the alternating tiers of fresh hydrangeas and roses with real cake. It was as towering beauty of elegance and class.
The pink sweetheart roses on this cake were the perfect finishing touch for a flawless buttercream finish on this exquisite cake. The entire design was minimalist with only fondant pearls for the borders and the small bunches of tiny roses.
This is the largest cake I've made to date (I think) and the vertical lines in buttercream were unique and stunning. To finish it off, the florist and I added clusters of fresh flowers 360° around the cake which was displayed in the center of the room.
The florals on the table and cascading onto the floor only made this cake more outstanding and eye-popping with its 360° views. I share more details and photos here.
Gold Wedding Cakes & Wedding Cakes with Gold Monograms
Gold Monograms are all the rage for wedding cakes and I've done quite a few. Both of these cakes had hand-cut monograms made with fondant and edible gold paint. I love the simplicity and I love that they were displayed on gold cake stands.
This beauty featured a hand-piped gold monogram near the top (done with royal icing) and elegant fondant lace on alternating tiers. It was a fondant covered cake and the centerpiece of this grand reception!
This wedding anniversary cake was so perfect and unique. The unique vertical ruffles on the bottom were paper thin and individually placed. Then there was the textured stencils with edible gold paint for the middle tier and the added texture of gold glitter sugar covering the top tier. The final touch was a gorgeous sugar peony.
This wedding anniversary cake was simpler, but no less elegant. It was edible gold leaf over buttercream and then sugar flowers and a rhinestone "50" for the topper.
This Gold Lace wedding cake is another elegant cake I'm extremely proud of. Paneled with fondant, then I applied edible gold lace around the tiers. Finished with gold pearl borders, it was delicate and detailed and so breath-taking.
This was the first really tall wedding cake I made years ago and it's still one of my favorites. Covered in fondant with gold fondant ribbons on the bottom of each tier, it was stunning.
The spaces with fresh flowers added plus the topper only made this cake more elegant and beautiful! You can read more about it here.
