Christmas Cookie Cake
Growing up, I loved nothing more than a cookie from the mall. Or a cookie cake from the mall! The frosting on those cookies was the best, and it's something I still think about even years after that store closed.
I've always liked eating cookies more than cake (shocker, I know), so receiving a custom cookie cake from the mall was a real treat for me as a kid! And now, I can make them at home.
Wreath Cookie Cake
Wreaths are one of my favorite things in life (not just for Christmas). I have a variety that I regularly change out on my back door (because we rarely use the front door). They make me happy and I love it that they're the first thing guests see when visiting my home.
So it's no wonder that when looking at Christmas cookie cake ideas, I settled on this delicious Wreath Cake. It's one of my favorite Christmas desserts!!
Chocolate Chip Cookie Cake
This Christmas Wreath cake is a chocolate chip cookie cake recipe, but I used white chocolate chips this time and some Christmas sprinkles (because white chocolate cookies 😋). Decorated with some incredible frosting that reminds me of the Great American Cookie frosting, this recipe is the best!

Tools Needed
- 10-inch springform pan (or pizza pan or cake pan) - springform is easiest!
- Large Bowl and Hand Mixer OR Stand Mixer
- Piping Bags and Tips (unless using premade frosting in tubes)
- Cooling Rack
Ingredients
These are all very common pantry ingredients you'll have no trouble finding to make Christmas cookie cakes.
Note: frosting ingredients not pictured.
Cookie Cake Ingredients
This delicious cookie cake is made with common pantry staples.
- Brown Sugar
- Eggs at room temperature
- Butter, melted
- Vanilla extract
- Christmas Holiday Sprinkles (red and green sprinkles)
- White Chocolate Chips
- All-Purpose Flour
- Baking soda
- Salt
- Cornstarch
Frosting Ingredients
I much, much prefer homemade frosting over any store-bought frosting on the market, but for ease, if you want to buy premade (pre-colored) tubes of green and red frosting, I won't hold it against you. This is the busiest season of the year and sometimes, shortcuts are the best idea when you have a Christmas tree to decorate!
- Butter
- Crisco (vegetable shortening)
- Powdered Sugar
- Milk (or heavy cream or water)
- Salt
- Vanilla Extract
- Hot Water
- Green and Red Gel Food Coloring
Decorations for the Cookie Cake
- Red and green frosting
- Red sour candy tape
- White pearl sprinkles (optional)

Substitutions
Sprinkles. if you're making a cookie cake and it's not the holidays, use any sprinkles you like - they don't need to be Christmas-themed!
White Chocolate Chips. This recipe will work with any chocolate chips! If you don't like white chocolate chips, use milk chocolate chips, semi-sweet chocolate chips or even dark chocolate chips. You could even go crazy with peanut butter chips or butterscotch chips.
Homemade Frosting. If you have a go-to vanilla frosting recipe that you already love, you can certainly use that for this cookie cake. You could also use my American Buttercream recipe here or my Cream Cheese Frosting recipe.
Homemade Frosting Alternatives. If you want to save some time and effort, you can buy premade frosting tubes that are already colored and have a fancy piping tip attached. This is the perfect choice if you want to save time making this Wreath Cake.
Walmart has this red frosting and green frosting.
Love buttercream? Try this Christmas Buttercream Board!
Red Frosting. You could skip the red frosting and use red M&M's to decorate your wreath. Or really, any other red candies would work such as red cherry sours, red gum drops, or red gum balls.
Red Sour Candy Tape - use fondant in a bow mold (or make a fondant bow yourself) or use a red ribbon bow (a real fabric ribbon).
How to Make a Chocolate Chip Cookie Cake
During this busy holiday season, you'll love making and sharing this giant chocolate chip cookie cake.
Cookie Dough
- Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease a springform pan. Line with parchment paper for extra insurance that the cake won't stick.
- In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the eggs, melted butter, vanilla extract, and brown sugar.
- Add the remaining dry ingredients (flour, cornstarch, salt, and baking soda). Mix until a dough forms.
- Fold sprinkles and chocolate chips into the cookie batter.
- Transfer the dough to the prepared springform pan, spreading it evenly with a rubber spatula. Press the remaining chips into the top of the cake to make I look really fancy and pretty.
- Bake for 25 minutes, or until golden brown. Let it cool completely.on a wire rack.
Copycat Great American Cookie Frosting
While the cake is baking, make the cookie frosting! Or use tubes of premade... you do you!
- In a separate bowl, cream the softened butter and shortening together until smooth and creamy
- When the frosting is completely smooth, add in the milk, powdered sugar, pinch of salt, and vanilla extract. Mix until completely combined.
- Add the hot water and mix until smooth.
- Divide and color 1 ½ cups of the frosting green and ½ cup red. Use a few drops of coloring at a time until you reach the desired color. Don't forget that buttercream color takes time to fully develop
Decorating the Cake
- Once the cookie cake has cooled, use a star tip to pipe green frosting around the edge, creating a wreath shape.
- Pipe small red circles on the green frosting to resemble holly berries.
- Tie a bow using red sour candy tape and place it at the base of the wreath.
- Finish by sprinkling white sugar pearls over the top.
Pro Tips
- No Springform Pan? You can use a 10-inch pizza pan (or round 10-inch cookie sheet), a 10-inch round cake pan, or even an 8x10 baking sheet - but it'll be a rectangular wreath 😉 You can pretty much make this giant cookie in any baking pan you have that's close to the same size as the pan I used and you'll still end up with a very festive cake!
- No Sticking! For easy removal, line whichever pan you choose with parchment paper as extra insurance against your cookie cake sticking and not popping out of the pan easily.
- Make it look like it came from a bakery! A trick that bakeries use to make their cookies look so mouth-watering is to place chocolate chips (or M&M's or whatever) on top of the cake (before baking). So if you want to do this, mix a cup of chocolate chips into the cookie batter, then press the remaining chips into the top of the cookie dough to make I look really fancy and pretty!
Variations
This Christmas Cookie Cake recipe can be changed up to suit your likes.
- Change the chocolate. As I've already mentioned, you can replace the white chocolate chips for milk, semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips.
- Use M&M's. If you want to skip the white chocolate chips altogether, green and red Christmas M&M's are the perfect addition to your cookie dough. The bonus for this is you can use the red M&M's to decorate the wreath and skip making red frosting.
- Skip the wreath. If you don't want to bother with a wreath, Christmas cookie cakes can be decorated any way you like for a festive look. Add a simple piped border, cover the whole thing with frosting and add sprinkles, decorate it by piping a large snowflake in the center of the cake, etc.
Storage Directions
Christmas Cookie Cakes should be stored in an airtight container or tightly wrapped in foil or plastic wrap. Cookie cakes are good at room temperature for up to 3 days before they start to dry out.
