Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Cake (and a very busy week!!)

It’s a Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Cake!

But I’ll get to that in a minute. This week has been a busy, busy week! Honestly, about 5 weeks ago I seriously cut my back my personal limit on cake orders (no more than 3-4 per weekend) so I could focus more on  homeschooling my kiddos and keeping my house not looking like a bomb blew up clean.

But somehow – this week slipped through the cracks of  “my limit” and I took way too many orders. Well, not “way too many” in a way that I can’t do them – I used to average 5-8 cakes (sometimes 10) per weekend. But “way too many” to maintain getting enough sleep, keeping my house semi-clean, keeping my kids on track with their schoolwork, and, oh yeah, my sanity!

Since I knew this week was coming, over the weekend I wrote and scheduled ahead a couple of blog posts… like the How to Build a Rocket Ship Cake Tutorial and the recipe for Broccoli, Rice & Cheese Casserole. And then on Monday I made the Sugar-Free Pineapple Lush cake and went ahead an took pics and made notes to write it up too! And on Tuesday, I made the impromptu decision to do a giveaway!

I was doing good… or so I thought. Then on Tuesday night, it hit me! I had (have) 2 wedding cakes, 2 groom’s cakes, 2 birthday cakes, and 48 cupcakes. I needed to make 30+ pounds of  marshmallow fondant. And who knows how much buttercream. And other weird things, like fins and whiskers for a catfish cake and loops for bows and spiral binding for a book cake.

Somewhere in the midst of that, I panicked. I got a migraine. I got some serious neck/shoulder pain (my #1 symptom of stress), and I sort of fell apart.

Then I decided I needed to suck it up and get busy. I mean, because really… what other choice did I have? I also decided that I needed to decide what (if any) other blog posts I was going to write for the week and get them done, because after Tuesday… it was all uphill and I was going to be too busy to write!!

So I looked over what I had already posted and had planned to post… and realized there wasn’t a decorated cake on the list this week. So here it is… your decorated cake for the week!

It’s a simple, but fun Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Cake (I’ve already said that, huh?). So, here are a few details if you want to make this cake…

For the ears, I mixed lots of Tylose into some  Satin Ice Black Vanilla fondant, then I rolled it out thin and used a 3″ round cutter to cut them out. I let them dry for 24-48 hours, then I used Tylose glue (tylose plus water to form a sticky edible glue) to “glue” craft sticks to the back of the ears. I covered them with a narrow trip of fondant and let them dry some more, then I just pushed the bottom of the sticks into the cake!

The feet were rice cereal treats covered in fondant. My customer asked for “Disney” font for his name so I did my best to hand-craft his name “Tayton” Disney style!

The cake was all white wedding cake flavored with vanilla buttercream. It was baked in an 8″ round pan plus the Wilton sports ball pan for Mickey’s head.

The red and black fondant were Satin Ice brand:  Satin Ice Red Vanilla fondant and Satin Ice Black Vanilla fondant. The white and yellow were homemade marshmallow fondant.

  3. Your cake are so nice. I am just trying to get into fondant cakes. I have done cakes though for 35 years. I like the shiny look, but I don’t have access right now to the satin fondant. Is there another way om get the shiny effect withou the satin fondant?
