Why You’ll Love This 7-Layer Taco Dip Recipe
There are lots of store-bought versions out there, but homemade always wins. This layered dip has nice, thick layers, fresh ingredients, and plenty of flavor.
Reasons this recipe is one of my favorite things:
- Perfect party appetizer for game day, potlucks, and family gatherings
- Uses simple ingredients you can find anywhere
- Easy to customize with favorite taco toppings
- Can be made ahead of time
- No cooking required
- Makes a beautiful presentation in a glass dish or serving dish

Equipment Needed
- Large mixing bowl
- Hand mixer (optional)
- Rubber spatula
- 9×13 baking dish, casserole dish, or glass dish
- Measuring cups
- Knife and cutting board
Ingredients
Simple ingredients layered to make a delicious, festive dip!

- Sour cream
- Cream cheese – let the cream cheese come to room temperature before mixing. Cold cream cheese can leave lumps in your sour cream layer.
- Taco seasoning – DIY Taco Seasoning or store-bought packet
- Refried beans – we always use refried pinto beans but refried black beans would also work great here
- Guacamole – you can use store-bought guacamole for convenience or make your own guacamole with mashed avocado, fresh lime juice, and a little onion flavor. Either works great in the avocado layer.
- Red onion, diced (see how to chop onions here)
- Shredded cheese or crumbled cheese such as Cheddar, Monterey Jack, or Cotija
- Fresh tomatoes or chunky salsa – roma tomatoes, grape tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, fresh pico de gallo, or even a layer of salsa all work well here. Check out our homemade salsa recipe here.
- Black olives, sliced
Note: For the flag design, white cheese works best. Monterey Jack, Cotija crumbles, or Mozzarella create the white stripes for presentation purposes. My personal favorite for flavor is Monterey Jack.

How to Make 7 Layer Dip
This is a really easy dip to make and perfect for so many occasions! The hardest part is waiting to dig in!
- First thing, in a large bowl, combine the sour cream, softened cream cheese, and taco seasoning. Mix until smooth and fully combined. A hand mixer works great for making a creamy layer.

- Open the can of refried beans, mix it up until it’s smooth and creamy, then spread a layer of beans evenly into the bottom of a 9×13 serving dish.
- Carefully spread the guacamole on top of the beans.

- Sprinkle diced red onion over the guacamole layer.
- Spread the cream cheese layer evenly over the onions.

- Add an even layer of shredded cheese.
- Sprinkle diced fresh tomatoes and sliced black olives over the top.
- Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until ready to serve.

How to Make a 4th of July Dip
For all of our patriotic holidays, this recipe can easily be made into an American Flag dip. It’s a perfect appetizer for summer potlucks, patriotic holidays, and presentation purposes:
- Follow steps 1-6 above.
- Arrange black olives in the upper left corner to form the star section. I used about 5 slices by 6 slices.
- Create alternating stripes with shredded white cheese and tomatoes.

- Refrigerate until serving time.

Pro Tips
- Use full-fat sour cream for the creamiest sour cream layer.
- Pre-shredded cheese saves time, but freshly shredded cheese melts and tastes better.
- Spread each layer gently so the ingredients stay in nice thick layers.
- Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving for extra flavor.
- Add green onions, taco meat, green chiles, red peppers, bell peppers, or hot sauce for more flavor.
- Tortilla chips or corn chips are the perfect pairing.
- Add cooked taco meat for a heartier appetizer.
- Use DIY Taco Seasoning and homemade refried beans for better control of your ingredients.

Easy 7 Layer Dip Recipe (Perfect 4th of July Dip!)
Description
This Easy 7-Layer Dip recipe is a classic crowd-pleasing appetizer made with creamy refried beans, a flavorful sour cream mixture, fresh guacamole, shredded cheese, tomatoes, and black olives layered together in one delicious dip. Perfect for game day, summer potlucks, birthday parties, and holiday gatherings, this simple cold Mexican dip comes together in just minutes and pairs perfectly with crunchy tortilla chips. You can even turn this layered dip into a festive 4th of July appetizer by arranging the toppings into an American flag design!
Ingredients
- 16 oz. sour cream
- 8 oz. cream cheese, softened
- 1 packet (1 oz.) taco seasoning
- 1 32 oz. can refried beans, or 2 15.9 oz. cans
- 16 oz. guacamole
- 1 red onion, diced
- 2 cups shredded or crumbled cheese (see notes)
- 2 cups tomatoes, diced, or salsa
- 4 oz. olives, sliced
Instructions
- Stir sour cream, cream cheese, and taco seasoning together until all the taco seasoning is evenly distributed
- In a 9×13 inch pan, layer refried beans, then guacamole
- Sprinkle with onions, then spread cream cheese mixture on top
- Sprinkle with cheese, then tomatoes, and olives
- Refrigerate until ready to serve
To Make a Flag:
- Arrange olives in the top left corner in a large square. I did a 5 slices by 6 slices
- hen make the stripes out of tomatoes and cheese.
Notes
For the flag, you need to use white cheese such as cotija (crumbles), or monterey jack. You can also use Mozzarella cheese, but for me, that’s not the best combo with taco flavoring.
