These Piano Recital Music Note Cupcakes are so easy to make and make such a great impression! They're also easy to put together and I'm gonna share the details below!
The week I made these, I felt like I was drowning in pink buttercream. My client ordered 6 dozen of these pretties for her daughter's Senior Recital.
I also had an order for this 60th birthday cake covered in pink buttercream roses. I wasn't sure how much I'd need for those orders, so I made two huge batches and ended up with enough extra to decorate this cake too.
Pink, pink, pink everywhere. And it was buttercream 🙂 A dream come true... haha!
On another note, I feel like lately my cake business has taken a turn. I won't say a "turn for the worse" or a "turn for the better"... its just taken a different path...
Things are changing...
For years I did cakes every weekend. Some weekends I'd do as many as 8 or 10 cakes and other weekends it would be only 2 or 3 or 4. But near the end of last year when we bought our new home, I stopped taking a lot of orders so we'd have time to move. I already had a few cake orders on my calendar, but beyond those - I tried to keep my baking to a minimum.
I also hoped to remodel the kitchen in our new home before getting super busy with cakes again. But that hasn't happened.
First, we all got the flu. Twice in December and January. And strep too, as if having the flu wasn't enough. Then when I finally felt like we were getting back into some kind of routine, Sarah had her accident. It took weeks before any of us began to feel normal again after that.
And since then... well, things have been different. We still haven't started on the kitchen (long story), so when I do cakes, I work in a very limited space. That fact alone motivates me to keep my orders to a minimum.
Quite a few of my "regular" customers also found someone else to do their cakes over those months when I wasn't working a lot. 🙁 At first I was pretty upset about it, but they needed cakes when I wasn't available and I could hardly blame them for finding a new cake lady. I still have some wonderfully loyal customers that have stuck with me and for that, I'm so grateful.
Good news.
The good news is, I've started to pick up new customers closer to my new home and because we've moved to a more accessible area, these new clients can pick up at my home versus me driving to meet them.
Also, I'm working more during the week - on smaller orders - and not having my weekends completely packed with cakes all the time. Recently, two weeks in a row, I had orders only during the week and they were smaller, more manageable orders - perfect in my small kitchen. I did cookies, petit fours (for National Nurses Week 🙂 ), small cakes and cupcakes. And honestly, I loved it!!
Now don't get me wrong. I still love doing the fancy birthday cakes. I can't imagine ever not doing them. And wedding cakes are my favorite! I also love having a base of loyal customers that I know will always use me to do their cake orders - no matter what they need! For those customers, I'll do anything!
But I've also fallen in love with these smaller orders that I can finish up during the week and be able to relax some weekends. Who doesn't want that?!
Music Note Cupcakes
Anyway, let me tell you some details about these Piano Recital Music Notes Cupcakes....
The cupcakes were White Almond Sour Cream Cake. They were topped with pastel pink vanilla buttercream. The buttercream was piped on with Ateco #825 tip and then I topped them with the chocolate music notes.
For the toppers, I melted chocolate candy melts in piping bags. Then I snipped off the end of the piping bag and free-hand piped the music notes onto wax paper.

I put them in the freezer for a few minutes and they were good to go. I made sure to pipe a "pick" onto the bottom of each note so that I could stick them into the buttercream. Easy-peasy and so pretty!
Oh and I baked the cupcakes in brown glassine liners, then they were wrapped in these Music Note Cupcake Wraps I ordered from Etsy. This is how they came:
They were really easy to put together. My only warning would be - if you need these for an order, don't wait until the last minute. The shipping took longer than I anticipated and I started to get a little nervous about them arriving on time.
But they did arrive and YAY - the Music Note Cupcakes turned out super cute!
I packed them up in my Tiffany blue boxes from BRP Box Shop and I was done 🙂 Well, except for worrying about them melting in the Mississippi heat! But I do know they made it to the venue intact... whew!
