Vintage Heart Shaped Cake
There’s just something about a Vintage Heart Shaped Cake. It feels romantic, nostalgic, and a little extra special all at once. Finished with delicate piping, shells, and ruffles, these cakes have a way of turning any celebration into something special.

Vintage Heart Shaped Cakes
Vintage heart cakes are so popular right now. Bakers everywhere are bringing back classic piping techniques for everything from wedding cakes to baby showers and birthdays.
And I’m really loving it! I actually love all of the vintage cakes (not just the heart ones)! They’re just so special and remind me of why I fell in love with cake decorating when I was a teenager.
Vintage heart cakes aren’t just trendy. They’re timeless.
Why We Love the Heart Shape
The heart has always symbolized love, so it’s perfect for celebrations. And while round cakes are classic, a heart-shaped cake instantly feels more thoughtful and intentional. Add vintage piping details and suddenly it’s not just dessert, it’s a statement piece.
Vintage designs feel both elegant and personal. They remind us of old-school bakeries where every cake was made by hand with care. There’s a sweetness to that style that disappeared for a while in the cake decorating world, but I’m so happy to say it’s back and hopefully to stay!

The Vintage Heart Cake above was finished with soft pink buttercream (strawberry flavor) and slim black ribbons.
Perfect for So Many Occasions
Of course, they’re beautiful for Valentine’s Day. But vintage heart-shaped cakes are also perfect for bridal showers, weddings, anniversaries, and birthday parties.
Classic Vintage Details
Vintage cakes are known for their signature touches. Think a large shell border around the edges and those gorgeous double ruffle garlands draped across the sides. They take patience, but the finished look is so worth it.
Soft pinks are especially popular, from light blush to deeper rose tones. That dreamy buttercream finish is what gives these cakes their timeless charm.

For the heart-shaped birthday cake above, my client requested a Hello Kitty edible image as a final touch to her pink vintage cake. Edible images are a great way to add unique details to your cakes without a lot of extra work!
How to Make a Heart-Shaped Cake from a Sheet Cake
If you don’t have a heart pan, there are a couple of options where you don’t have to have any special pans,
First, you can bake sheet cakes, grab a sharp knife and a cutting board, print the template from this post, and you’re all set to cut out your heart-shaped cake layers. I have a full heart cake tutorial here.
Or… you can start with round cakes.
How to Make a Heart-Shaped Cake from a Round Cake
- Start with a round cake.
Bake and cool a perfectly round cake layer. Place it on a cake board and make sure it’s level. - Cut a “V” from the bottom.
Slice two straight lines from the bottom edge toward the opposite edges (see the pic below), then remove the cut pieces. This creates the point of the heart. - Move the pieces to the top.
Attach the two cut pieces to the upper left and right sides using a little frosting to hold them in place. - Trim and frost.
Slightly trim the top center to create the heart indentation, then frost the entire cake to smooth and finish the shape.
