As a home baker and cake decorator, I'm often criticized (in a fun way) by my friends when they find out Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cakes, Brach's Candy Corn, and Peeps are some of my favorite treats. My friend Lindsey (who loves sweets as much as I do) is always particularly vocal about my "dessert" choices. But y'all - I love them all!
Peeps in particular have been a favorite since I was a little girl. My Mama would always hit up the dollar stores or Walmart the day after Easter to buy me bags of clearance Peeps! Granted, I don't eat them in those quantities anymore because you know... I'm old. But whatevs. I still love them!
Why You'll Love Peeps S'mores
Easy. Peep S'mores are so easy to make in the oven - and having s'mores without fire is even better!
Use up leftovers. They're also an easy Easter dessert or a great way to use up leftover Peeps after Easter! Your kids will get the biggest kick out of this fun, colorful sweet treat and you don't even need a fire.
Cheap. Also, Peeps S'mores are cheap! Even if you pay full price, s'mores ingredients are not expensive. And if you wait and grab the Peeps on clearance after Easter, then you can make this yummy treat for pennies!
Why Peeps Make the Perfect S'mores Marshmallows
When choosing marshmallows for s'mores, the sugary crust on the outside of Peeps makes baked s'mores a little more special than regular s'mores.
This outer coating caramelizes in the oven, creating a slightly crispy texture that is delicious and perfect with melted chocolate and graham crackers!
Also, with the bright colors and different shapes to choose from, Peeps are just happy and playful! Today we're talking about Easter desserts, but Peeps are becoming more and more popular with varieties coming out for nearly every holiday, so you can make these for any season!

How to Make Baked Smores
- Start by preheating your oven to broil.
- Lay all your graham crackers out on a baking rack, or baking sheet with parchment paper.
- On one-half of the graham crackers, place a peep’s marshmallow on top. On the remaining graham crackers, add half a Hershey bar.
- Place on the oven rack (near the top or middle) and watch them very CLOSELY.
- Once your marshmallows have browned (it only takes a couple of minutes), remove them.
- Assemble your s’mores by flipping the marshmallow-topped graham cracker over and place on top of the chocolate.
- Enjoy! The melted marshmallow peeps are gooey perfection and these s'mores are sooo good! They taste just like they came from a campfire.
Pro Tips
For Peeps S'mores perfection, here are a few tips:
- Watch them closely! There is a very fine line between a toasted Peep and a burnt Peep... usually only a matter of seconds. For my oven, it only takes about 2 minutes to melt the Peeps to a golden brown. But your oven may be hotter or cooler so watch them very, very closely!
- For extra melty chocolate... place only the chocolate-topped graham crackers on your baking sheet and warm them in the oven for a minute before adding the Peeps-topped crackers. This extra step ensures the chocolate has maximum meltiness.
- Easy cleanup. Clean up the easy way by lining your baking sheet with a silicone mat or parchment paper. Don't skip this step! This little preparation can save you from a sticky situation later on, making your baking experience as enjoyable as the eating part.
- Make more! Double or triple the recipe and cover your entire sheet pan with graham crackers to make huge s'mores! Again, this is a fun way to use up leftover peeps after Easter.
Variations
- Graham Crackers: if you want a little extra flavor for your smores, you can use cinnamon graham crackers instead of plain honey graham crackers. Or double the chocolate with chocolate graham crackers.
- Chocolate: Classic S'mores are almost always made with Hershey's Bars, but you can use any chocolate bar that you like! Try a dark chocolate bar, a cookies & cream bar, or even peanut butter cups. If you don't have any chocolate bars on hand, milk chocolate chips, semi-sweet chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, or any other variety can be sprinkled onto the graham crackers and melted.
- Peeps: Of course, you can use any color of Peeps that you want or even change it up and use the original Peeps (chicks) instead of bunnies. And if it's not Easter time, you can make these any time of year with whatever themed Peeps are available!
Gluten-Free S'mores
The original Marshmallow Peeps and Peeps Bunnies (and most regular marshmallows) are all gluten-free (I couldn't check all special flavors and varieties of Peeps).
Hershey's Chocolate Bars (only in the 1.55 oz. size) are gluten-free.
And you can buy gluten-free graham crackers to specifically make gluten-free Peeps S'mores. Find gluten-free graham crackers on Amazon here and at Walmart here.
Storage Directions
Best Fresh! Let me start by saying that these are best served fresh and warm right out of the oven.! However... if you have leftovers of these Easy S'mores, you can store them for another day.
Storing: They can be stored in a Ziploc bag or an airtight container. Keep them at room temperature for 4-5 days. However, the longer you keep them, the crackers will start to get soft and stale.
Reheating: If you want to reheat the leftover s'mores, place them on a microwave-safe plate and heat them for 8-10 seconds. The marshmallows will puff up and possibly ooze onto the plate when you do this so I recommend a paper plate for the easiest cleanup.
Leftover s'mores can also be reheated in the oven. Preheat the oven to 350°F and bake them for a couple of minutes until the marshmallows and chocolate are melty again. This can be done on a baking sheet, in a baking dish or in a skillet. This will also crisp up the crackers for a great texture contrast.
FAQ
While Peeps used to be strictly an Easter treat, now you can get them more often. Maybe not all the time, but I've seen Halloween Peeps, Christmas Peeps, and Valentine's Peeps!
