Mummy Pizza
Halloween is not my favorite holiday. We don't usually celebrate at all, but I do enjoy some fun, themed foods, and that's where this Mumy pizza comes in. This was so much fun to make and eat!
Tools
- Baking sheet or pizza stone
- Parchment paper
- Measuring cups
- Measuring spoons
- Cutting board
- Paring knife
- Pizza cutter
Ingredients
The recipe is for a single pizza, so you'll need to scale it up if you want to make multiples!
Flatbread—I used Stonefire Roasted Garlic Naan Flatbread for this recipe, which comes two per pack. It is also naturally oval which is perfect for this Mummy Pizza. There are lots of different varieties of Stonefire brand Naan available on the market—feel free to use any of them for this flatbread pizza recipe.
Pizza Sauce - Any brand of pizza sauce will work.
Mozzarella String Cheese Sticks
Pepperoni
Black Olives - Grab a can of sliced black olives to make life super easy. Slicing olives evenly is a bit of a pain.
Parsley and Oregano - These herbs are optional. Use dried herbs if you have them, fresh herbs if you prefer, or skip them altogether.
Substitutions
Flatbread - Stonefire brand is not required. You can use any other Naan or rounded/oval shaped flatbread that you can get your hands on.
Don't want to use store-bought flatbread? No problem! Use your favorite pizza dough or pre-made pizza crust as a base. Keep in mind that you want it to be someone oval shaped for the mummy theme.
Pizza Sauce - Any easy substitute for pizza sauce is using tomato sauce. For every one cup of tomato sauce, add ½ teaspoon each of field basil, dried oregano, and minced garlic. Easy-peasy! You can also use spaghetti sauce instead of pizza sauce if you have that on hand.
Pepperoni - Sliced hard salami could be used in place of pepperoni for this Halloween pizza recipe.
How to Make Halloween Pizza
Pizza is the perfect meal for the spooky holiday because you can make it fun and festive and still enjoy all the good stuff! Homemade flatbread pizza is such an easy shortcut!
- Pre-heat oven to 375°F.
- Line a pizza stone or baking sheet with parchment paper and place your flatbread on top.
- Spoon the pizza sauce over the flatbread, leaving about a ½-inch wide rim around the circumference of the flatbread.
- Peel the string cheese into 4-5 long pieces per stick, and arrange them over the sauce to resemble the linen wrappings of a mummy.
- Place two pepperoni slices over the cheese around ⅓ of the way down from the top edge of the flatbread to make eyes for the mummy.
- Place a slice of black olive over each pepperoni to resemble irises & pupils.
- Sprinkle oregano and parsley over the entire flatbread, then place into the oven and bake for 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and starting to bubble.
- Allow the pizza to cool slightly before serving.
Pro Tips
- This recipe lists the ingredients needed for a single pizza. If you plan to make more than one, simply multiply the ingredient amounts as needed for the number you'll make.
- If using fresh pizza dough for your base, I recommend par-baking first. Otherwise, you will need to add additional baking time to ensure that your crust is baked-through. Usually, 8-10 minutes at 350° F, or until it starts to brown lightly, is sufficient.
- You can also get creative with your toppings - consider adding other cured meats, cheeses, or veggies like bell peppers to add additional facial features (such as a mouth or eyebrows) or to make a different spooky pizza display.
More Halloween Pizza Ideas
Halloween pizzas don't have to be mummies - there are so many spooky pizzas you can make. If you want to host a Halloween pizza party or October movie night, pizza is a great meal to serve because it is so versatile. Use extra cheese to make a solid white background for ghosts and other designs.
Here are just a few more ideas for Halloween-shaped pizza:
Ghost Pizza - Cover your flatbread completely in extra shredded mozzarella instead of the cheese sticks to make it a solid white (ish) cheese pizza. Then use pepperoni for the eyes and mouth. You could also use a ghost cookie cutter to cut ghost shapes out of sliced mozzarella to add several ghosts on top of your pizza sauce.
Spider Pizza - Another Halloween night pizza idea is to use the strips of mozzarella sticks to make a spider web all over the pizza, then make spiders out of black olives. Buy whole and sliced black olives; use half a black live (with the cut side down) for the spider bodies and cut the slices in half to make legs around the body.
Pumpkin-Shaped Pizza (or Jack-O Pizza): For this idea, use round flatbreads. Use a sharp knife to cut a sliver off one edge for the top of the pumpkin, then use part of that sliver to create a stem. Cover the pizza in pizza sauce and cheese (shredded cheddar would make an orange pizza). Outline the pizza crust with pepperoni, then use more pepperoni for the eyes, nose, and mouth of the Jack-O-Lantern pizza. Add black olives for the eyes as you did on the Mummy Pizza.
Mini Pizzas - Use large cookie cutters to cut out shapes of pumpkins, cats, ghosts, or whatever freaky shapes you desire for your Halloween themed pizza. For example, you can buy a pre-made crust and use large ghost or oval cookie cutters to make mini ghost pizzas or mummy pizzas for Halloween treats.
Serving Suggestions
Serve pizza Halloween night, and you will have some happy kiddos in your house!
