Cinnamon Sugar Tortilla Chips
My family loves to have sopapilla at our local Mexican restaurant. Actually, I'm not sure that what they serve is sopapilla. It's more like churro chips with chocolate syrup and whipped cream. Is that different?
Whatever they're called - that dessert is what inspired this cinnamon chips recipe.
Of course, these baked cinnamon sugar tortilla chips aren't exactly the same thing, but they are a perfect snack with a very similar flavor. Add some fresh fruit, like fresh strawberries; they are an over-the-top delicious dessert!
Cinnamon Sugar Tortilla Chips Recipe
Homemade Cinnamon Tortilla Chips are an easy recipe to make. And they are so versatile - you can eat cinnamon sugar chips on their own, with fruit dip, with ice cream, or with whipped cream and chocolate sauce, just to name a few options.
Why You'll Love Cinnamon Sugar Chips
With a package of tortillas, a little butter, and a cinnamon-sugar mixture, you can make this tasty snack any time you want! And here's why you'll love them:
- Easy - homemade tortilla chips baked with sweet cinnamon sugar and ready to eat in under 30 minutes! You can make these with leftover tortillas if you want to use them up!

- Delicious - if you love cinnamon toast, sopapilla, or any other cinnamon sugar dessert - you'll love this sweet snack too!
Tools Used
- Baking sheet
- Parchment paper or silicon baking mat
- Mixing bowls
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Cutting board
- Pizza cutter or a large knife
- Pastry brush
Ingredients
There are only 4 simple ingredients for these homemade chips!
- Flour tortillas
- Butter - you could also substitute nonstick cooking spray for the butter if you want
- Granulated white sugar
- Ground cinnamon
How to Make Cinnamon Sugar Tortilla Chips
This sweet treat has a super simple recipe.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F.
- Line a baking sheet with parchlment paper and set aside.
- In a medium sized mixing bowl, combine sugar and cinnamon until thoroughly combined.
- Place the tortillas on a cutting board and cut them into 8 triangles apiece using a pizza cutter or sharp knife.
- Place the tortilla triangles onto your prepared cookie sheet in an even layer. If you have more than will fit on a baking sheet, make a second batch instead of crowding them!
- Melt the butter in small bowl in the microwave for 30 seconds or until melted.
- Use a pastry brush to brush the melted butter onto the tops of the tortilla wedges.
- Sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture over the tortillas, then flip them over and repeat the process with the butter and cinnamon sugar again on the other sides.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes, flipping the tortilla pieces halfway through baking to ensure that both sides crisp up and get a slight golden brown color.
- Remove cinnamon crisps from the oven and allow to cool completely before serving. You can leave them on the baking sheet or spread them on a cooling rack. They will continue to crisp up the longer they cool.
Note: the chips are piled up on the parchment for this photo but they do need to be spread out into a single layer before baking! Bake two batches if needed!
How to Make Cinnamon Sugar Tortilla Chips in Air Fryer
- Prepare the cinnamon and sugar tortilla chips as described above.
- Preheat the air fryer to 350°F.
- Place the coated tortilla pieces in the air fryer basket in a single layer, ensuring they do not overlap.
- Air fry for about 5-6 minutes or until the chips are crispy and golden brown. Shake the basket halfway through to ensure even cooking.
Pro Tips
- You can use salted or unsalted butter. I like a little saltiness to my chips, but you can use unsalted butter if you prefer.
- Too much butter will make them soggy or chewy - especially the leftovers!
- You can also use apple pie spice or pumpkin pie spice in place of the cinnamon if you want to add a little extra flavor and dimension to your chips.
- If you have more than will fit on a baking sheet, make a second batch instead of crowding them!
- You can also serve these chips with sweet dips, or eat them on their own.
Dips for Cinnamon Sugar Tortilla Chips
You can enjoy these with any sweet, creamy dip. Here are some of my faves:
Serving Suggestions
- As mentioned above, you could serve these sweet chips with any number of your favorite sweet dips or a dessert cheese ball for an appetizer at a holiday party. I love to eat fruit salsa with cinnamon chips!
- Make dessert nachos by drizzling the nachos with chocolate syrup then topping with fresh whipped cream and chopped strawberries. You could do the same with caramel sauce.
- These dessert tortilla chips also would make the perfect after-school snack for kids.
- Serve homemade cinnamon chips with vanilla ice cream to add some crunch and texture to a bowl of ice cream. Add hot fudge on top for a really decadent treat. I have a great recipe for no-churn ice cream here.
