Substitutions

Instead of regular vodka, you could substitute vanilla vodka or citrus vodka for extra layers of flavor to step up your green jello shots.

Use whipped topping if you prefer that over fresh whipped cream or Reddi Wip.

Best Alcohol for Green Jello Shots

One of the best things about green Jello shots is how easy they are to customize. While vodka is the classic choice, you can experiment with several different spirits to create unique flavor combinations that are perfect for football parties, tailgates, and game day celebrations.

Vodka

Vodka is the most popular choice because its neutral flavor lets the lime Jello take center stage. Regular vodka works great, but citrus or lime-flavored vodka can add an extra burst of flavor.

White Rum

White rum adds a touch of sweetness that pairs beautifully with the tart flavor of lime Jello. It’s a great option if you want something a little different while still keeping the classic Jello shot taste.

Malibu Rum

Malibu Rum is perfect for adding a tropical twist to your green Jello shots. The coconut flavor complements the lime Jello surprisingly well, creating a sweet, refreshing treat that guests always enjoy. This is a great choice for summer parties or outdoor football gatherings.

Tequila

Want a margarita-inspired Jello shot? Try using silver tequila. The combination of tequila and lime Jello creates a fun, zesty flavor that feels like a miniature margarita in shot form.

Irish Whiskey

Irish whiskey isn’t the first spirit most people think of for Jello shots, but it can be a delicious option. Its smooth, slightly sweet flavor adds depth to the lime Jello and creates a more sophisticated take on the traditional party shot.

Gin

Gin lovers shouldn’t be afraid to experiment. The botanical flavors in gin pair surprisingly well with citrus flavors and can give your green Jello shots a unique twist.

How to Make Green Jello Shots

Making jello shots with lime jello is really easy! Here are the steps:

  1. Place the Lime Jello gelatin powder in a large mixing bowl and add the boiling hot water. Stir until the green jello powder has dissolved.
  2. Pour the vodka into the mix and lightly stir or whisk to incorporate.
  3. Fill each shot glass with the jello mixture, leaving just a bit of headroom at the top. This doesn’t have to be perfect, it just makes it easier to transport them to the fridge and leaves a bit of room for the whipped cream to sit.
  4. Place the shots in the refrigerator for 2 hours or until set.

Pro tip: Use a turkey baster to easily fill the glasses!

  1. Add Reddi Wip to the top of each shot glass. OR
  2. Or if using fresh whipped cream or Cool Whip, use a frosting bag and Ateco #824 frosting tip (or similar) to top each shot glass with a dollop of whipped cream. I usually do this by simply starting on the outer edge and working in a circle until the whipped cream is high enough. You can top them with whipped cream however you like, though.
  3. Sprinkle each shot with a bit of the chocolate jimmies followed by the multicolored green jimmies. The amount of sprinkles depends on what makes your heart happy.
  4. I usually shorten or remove the toothpicks from the toppers altogether and nestle them into the middle top of the cool whip. They’re not edible, but they sure are cute!
  5. Serve the jello shot cups on a large platter or spread out on a table and enjoy!

Tips for How to Make Green Jello Shots

  • If you’re able to find football sugar toppers, those would be edible, but I didn’t have much luck.
  • Do not garnish if you’re not serving the shots right away. It makes the garnishes odd textures.
  • You do not have to use the frosting bag and frosting tip, this is just the best way to get that gorgeous twirl of cool whip on the top of each shot. Great for a beautiful presentation! An easy alternative is Reddi Wip.
  • If you don’t want to make lime jello shots with vodka, you can use other types of alcohol. Just be careful that you don’t choose an alcohol that will change the color of the shot itself. Lime vodka or whipped cream vodka would be a great option!

Variations

Green Jell-O shots are not just for a football party. There are so many other fun variations you could go with!

Green Apple Jello Shots – Don’t love the lime flavor of Jello? You could use Sonic Green Apple Jello Mix (with apple vodka) and make Green Apple Jello Shots. . Different flavor but you’d still have a really cute party treat.

St. Patrick’s Day Jello Shots – add a piece of rainbow sour or a candy clover leaf to the top for a fun treat added to your St. Patrick’s Day party menu.

Key Lime Pie Jello Shots or Lime Margarita Jello Shots – make these into refreshing key lime pie jello shots for a summer party by adding a sprinkle of graham cracker crumbs and maybe twists of key limes or a small lime wedge with a pinch of lime zest. If you can’t find the fine crumbs in a box, use your food processor to grind up graham crackers – easy peasy.

Mardi Gras Jello Shots – add some green, purple and gold sprinkles to the top of the whipped cream for festive Mardi Gras jello shot cups

Christmas Jello Shots or Grinch Jello Shots – a key lime shooter would be a huge hit for a Christmas Party when you add red sprinkles on top. Or add a Grinch topper and a red candy heart on top of the whipped cream for a Grinch Jello Shot recipe.

Most Jello shots need at least 2-4 hours to fully set, but overnight is best if you want to be sure they’re firm and ready for your game day celebration.

Absolutely! Simply replace the alcohol with cold water, lemon-lime soda, or another non-alcoholic beverage. They’ll still have the same fun green color and be delicious treats.

Yes! Top them with whipped cream, green and white sprinkles, football-shaped candies, or small football picks to make them extra festive for tailgates, watch parties, and game day gatherings.

Definitely! Simply swap the green Jello for your team’s colors. The same recipe works with almost any flavor and color of gelatin, making it easy to customize for any football team or sports event.
