  • Butter, melted – I use salted butter, but you can use unsalted if you prefer.
  • Self Rising Flour – growing up, this is the only flour my Mama kept in the house. This is why it’s also in our favorite sugar cookies recipe.
  • Large Egg
  • Sugar
  • Sliced Peaches – you can make an easy peach cobbler with canned peaches or fresh peaches, depending on the season and what you have on hand.
  • Milk – we use whole milk but I’ve also used 2% milk and it works perfectly.
  • Powdered Sugar, Ice Cream, and/or Fresh Whipped Cream (optional toppings)

See recipe card for quantities.

Equipment

Maybe my favorite thing of all… this simple peach cobbler only takes one bowl and one dish (or baking pan) and a spoon – and you don’t even have to pull out a mixer to make it! Here is the equipment you’ll need:

Substitutions

  • Peaches – as mentioned, you can make this peach cobbler with canned peaches, fresh peaches, or frozen peaches (thawed)
  • How to Make Self-Rising Flour – if you don’t have self-rising flour on hand, you can easily make it. For every cup of self-rising flour needed, measure out 1 level cup of all-purpose flour and whisk in 2 teaspoons of baking powder.

Pro Tips:

  • You can use a sieve for dusting with powdered sugar to get an even dusting!
  • Melt the butter in the microwave quickly and easily. Melt in 15-second intervals so it doesn’t splatter.
  • I love my white dishes because they’re pretty but you can easily bake this in a regular 9×13 baking dish.

Storage & Reheating Directions

If you have any leftovers (we never do!), store this Southern Peach Cobbler covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Can leftover peach cobbler be frozen? Yes! However, the texture of the cake might be soggy when thawed. Baked peach cobbler can be frozen for up to 2-3 months. First, allow it to cool completely, then cover it tightly with plastic wrap before placing it in the freezer. To thaw, place it in the fridge overnight, then reheat in the oven or microwave (instructions below).

How to reheat peach cobbler? Some of my family members enjoy peach cobbler cold, but I like to reheat this simple peach cobbler with canned peaches in the microwave for 30 seconds to 1 minute. You could also reheat the whole dish in the oven at 250°F or a single portion in an oven-safe dish for 10-15 minutes.

FAQ

Can you make this peach cobbler with fresh or frozen peaches?

Yes! You will need approximately 3 fresh peaches for every 16-ounce can of peaches in the recipe. If you want to use frozen peaches, thaw them and measure out 4 cups. The good news is, you don’t have to be terribly precise with the amount of peaches in this recipe. If you have a little too few or a little too much, it still comes out great! For more peach conversions, check out this post.

Do I have to peel the peaches to make cobbler?

If you’re using fresh peaches for cobbler, you do NOT have to peel them! Of course, you can if you want to, but if you decide to leave the skins on, the cobbler has a little extra color and flavor! And peach skins are super soft, so they sort of melt into the dish and are not at all tough to chew.

Are frozen or canned peaches better for cobbler?

It really depends on what you like. I love the soft and tender texture of canned peaches in our cobbler. But frozen peaches, once thawed, will have a texture more similar to fresh peaches.

How do you keep this canned peach cobbler recipe from getting runny?

Peach cobbler recipes made with canned peaches tend to be runnier than when using fresh or frozen peaches. But the longer the peach cobbler cools, the more it will thicken up. However, if you would like to prevent it from being runny in the first place, you can add cornstarch to the filling mixture. Take 1-2 tablespoons of cornstarch and mix with 1-2 tablespoons of water. Then add this slurry to the filling before cooking.

The last recipe I tried dint have an egg… but it was extremely gummy inside. Tasted delicious but the texture was all wrong. What’s the role of the egg in your recipe? Thanks!
