Homemade Mozzarella Sticks
Back in 2010, I came across a recipe for homemade fried mozzarella sticks and couldn’t stop thinking about them. My family has always loved cheesy appetizers, but restaurant mozzarella sticks – and even the frozen kind from the grocery store – were expensive for our budget back then.
One afternoon after finishing a cake order and tackling what felt like endless laundry, I finally decided it was time to fry our own mozzarella sticks at home. We already had the cheese sticks and panko bread crumbs so we didn’t even have to go to the store.

Easy Homemade Mozzarella Sticks
Sarah joined me in the kitchen, and together we rolled, dipped, coated, and froze dozens of mozzarella sticks before frying them up golden brown and crispy. They turned out absolutely delicious with gooey melted cheese inside and crunchy Panko breadcrumbs outside!

We made a huge platter for a fraction of the restaurant price, complete with homemade marinara sauce for dipping (though my kids preferred ranch dressing!). And let me tell you. They were delicious!!!
Looking back now, the mozzarella sticks were great, but the memories of cooking together in the kitchen were even better:

Why You’ll Love These Mozzarella Sticks
- Crispy golden coating thanks to crunchy Panko breadcrumbs
- Gooey melted cheese inside
- Easy ingredients you can find anywhere
- Perfect party food, game day snack, or after-school treat

- Tongs or a slotted spoon
- Paper towels
- Baking sheet or platter
- Blender or immersion blender (optional for sauce)

How to Make Homemade Mozzarella Sticks
Don’t let this mozzarella stick recipe intimidate you – they’re really not hard to make!
- Cut the mozzarella cheese sticks in half.
- Set up 3 shallow bowls: one will have flour. Another small bowl for the eggs and milk. Then, a third small bowl for the Panko breadcrumbs mixed with parsley flakes:
- Coat cheese sticks in the flour.
- Dip the floured cheese stick into the egg mixture.

- Coat each mozzarella cheese stick completely in the panko mixture.
- For extra crispy mozzarella sticks, repeat the egg and breadcrumb mixture a second time.
- Place the breaded cheese sticks on a sheet pan or platter.
- Freeze the breaded sticks for 20 to 30 minutes.
- Heat about 2 inches of cooking oil in a skillet over medium heat. If you have a kitchen thermometer, the oil temperature should be around 350°-360°F.
- Fry the coated mozzarella sticks in small batches until golden brown and crispy, about 1 to 2 minutes.

- Remove from the hot oil and drain on a paper towel-lined plate. You could also place them on a wire rack over a cookie sheet to catch the excess oil.

- Allow them to cool slightly before serving.
- Serve warm with marinara sauce or ranch dressing for dipping.

How to Make Homemade Marinara Sauce
- Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat until shimmering.
- Add the minced garlic and sauté for 2 to 3 minutes until fragrant and lightly golden.
- Stir in the fire-roasted tomatoes, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes if using.
- Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 10 minutes.
- Taste and adjust seasoning before serving.
- For a chunky sauce, serve as-is.

Note: For a smoother sauce, allow it to cool slightly, then blend carefully in a blender for about 10 seconds or use an immersion blender. Add warm water if needed to thin the sauce to your preferred consistency.

Pro Tips for Perfect Mozzarella Sticks
- Don’t skip the freezing step! Freeze before frying so the cheese stays inside the coating.
- Use a kitchen thermometer if you can! Don’t overheat the oil, or the coating will brown before the cheese melts.
- Take your time. Fry in small batches for the crispiest results.
- Extra crispy coating! Double coat the cheese sticks for extra crunch.
- No Low Fat. Use whole milk mozzarella string cheese for the best melt and stretch.
- Get the perfect cheese pull! Serve immediately while hot and gooey cheese.
- No cheesesticks? Cut up block mozzarella into thick sticks if you don’t have cheesesticks on hand.
What to Serve with Mozzarella Sticks
These cheesy appetizers pair perfectly with:
- Homemade marinara sauce
- Ranch dressing
- Garlic aioli
- Pizza sauce
- Alfredo sauce
- Caesar salad
- Chicken wings

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make mozzarella sticks ahead of time?
Yes! Bread the cheese sticks and freeze them on a baking sheet. Once frozen solid, transfer them to a freezer bag and store for up to 2 months.
Can I air fry mozzarella sticks?
Yes. Spray lightly with cooking spray and air fry at 390°F for 6 to 8 minutes or until crispy.
Why did my cheese leak out?
Usually this happens when:
- The cheese wasn’t frozen long enough
- The oil was too hot
- The coating had gaps or thin spots
Can I use regular breadcrumbs instead of Panko?
You can, but Panko breadcrumbs give the mozzarella sticks a much crispier texture.
Can I make Air Fryer Mozzarella Sticks?
Yes! Homemade mozzarella sticks work great in the air fryer and come out crispy on the outside with gooey melted cheese inside — with much less mess than deep frying.
How to Make Air Fryer Mozzarella Sticks
- Bread the mozzarella sticks exactly as directed.
- Freeze them for at least 30 minutes (this is very important to minimize cheese leakage).
- Preheat your air fryer to 390°F.
- Lightly spray the mozzarella sticks with cooking spray.
- Arrange them in a single layer in the air fryer basket.
- Air fry for 5 to 7 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
Keep a close eye on them during the last couple of minutes because air fryers can vary and you may have to experiment to get the right temperature and time. Mozzarella sticks can go from perfect to exploded pretty quickly! Serve immediately with marinara sauce or ranch dressing.

Storage Instructions
Store leftover mozzarella sticks in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Reheat in an air fryer or oven at 375°F until hot and crispy again.
Avoid microwaving if possible because the coating can become soft.

These are the best! I tried them back around the time that Courtney posted the recipe. My son and some of the neighborhood children helped and we LOVED them. They are a little time consuming though so I think the next time I will make up a batch, freeze them and just take them out as I want to use them 🙂
oops that would've been Ree not Courtney lol I was just at the Women Living Well blog and mixed myself up!
You didn’t use marinara on the show I watched you made a dipping sauce you could also use for hot wings … Louisiana hot sauce with vinegar and another ingredient.
