Waffle Cone Maker vs Waffle Iron
A regular waffle iron is used to make waffles. As in... thick, fluffy pancake-like breakfast cakes covered in syrup, melted butter, and sometimes fruit. The grid on a waffle iron is deeper and waffles are often half an inch thick (give or take).
A waffle cone maker (or waffle cone iron) has a much shallower grid - making instead a crepe-like, really thin waffle that is then wrapped around a waffle cone form or pressed into a waffle bowl shaper. It's mean to hold ice cream or some other dessert filling.
Best Waffle Cone Maker
I have only used the Bosch Waffle Cone Maker with Waffle Cone form but it's an amazing tool. Paired with the Bosch Ice Cream attachment, you can learn how to make waffle cones at home and then make your own homeade ice cream to go in them! I have a recipe for OREO Cookies & Cream Ice Cream right here that is delicious!
As I researched a homemade waffle cone recipe, I noticed that several people used a Pizzelle maker to make waffle cones. I have not personally tried this but it looks like it might work if you have one of those already.
Ingredients:
These ingredients are very simple and easy to find. And yes, my recipe does include cocoa powder so this might even be called a chocolate waffle cone recipe (even though the chocolate flavor is pretty mild).
- Eggs
- Sugar
- Butter, melted
- All-purpose flour
- Cocoa powder
- Baking powder
- Salt
- Vanilla extract
- Milk
How to Make a Waffle Cone
With the right equipment, this easy waffle cone recipe will yield the best homemade waffle cones.
- Preheat waffle cone maker.
- In a large bowl, add eggs, sugar, butter, and beat until well combined, about 1 minute.
- Next, add the dry ingredients (flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, salt) to the egg mixture and whisk until just combined.
- Add the remaining wet ingredients (vanilla extract, milk) and mix to combine.
- Take 2 tablespoons of the waffle cone batter and add to the waffle maker and cook until done, or about 30 seconds.
- Once it’s golden brown, place the hot waffle on a clean kitchen towel, and quickly work to roll into a cone using the cone mold ending with the edges face down. Hold for 15-20 seconds, then set aside to finish hardening.
- Serve with your favorite ice cream.
Pro Tips
- Be quick when removing the waffle from the waffle maker, the waffle starts to harden within 5-10 seconds, so it’s important to start rolling the waffles immediately.
- Dip the top of waffle cones in melted chocolate and sprinkles for a sweeter treat. See toppings below.
- Fill the bottom of the cone with a little melted chocolate to plug any leaks. You can also drop a few chocolate chips into the bottom of a hot cooked waffle and they'll melt before the warm cone cools.
- Most waffle cone makers come with a cone mold, but you might also invest in a bowl mold to make waffle cone bowls. Any recipe for waffle cones will also work for waffle bowls!
After dipping the top of your waffle cone in melted chocolate, melted white chocolate, or caramel sauce, you can dip it in a number of things to make waffle ice cream cones extra fun and tasty!
- Nuts
- Mini Chocolate Chips
- Crushed Oreos
- Sprinkles
- Chopped up Candy Bars (Snickers, Butterfingers, M&M's etc.)
- Crushed Pretzels
